Acupressure First Aide

For thousands of years, Acupressure has offered a gentle, yet powerful, way to relieve pain and discomfort. With just a little bit of training, you can be well on your way to offering relief both for yourself and your loved ones. Unlike modern medications, Acupressure has no negative side-effects, and the hands-on approach aids its healing power. Come experience the joy of learning to bring aid and comfort to the loved ones in your life. Students will be given a basic understanding of oriental medicine, as well as a number of “recipes” to relive common problems. More advanced and continuing education is available on an individual basis upon request.
 

Acupressure II

Students learn a brief history of Swedish massage, then students are given “hands-on” instruction of the basic strokes of effleurage, petrissage, friction, tapotement and vibration. Through individual instruction and practice with fellow students, the student learns to give a full Swedish massage. Students will be required to receive two professional massages treatments.

Adult CPR and Basic First Aid

This course will focus on learning the skills necessary to perform Cardio-Pulmonary Resusciation and obstructed airway techniques in the adult population. In addition, you will learn to recognize the signs and symptoms of a heart attack, understand the risk factors commonly associated with heart disease and what steps you can take to reduce these risks. Also, this course will help you learn to assess for and provide forst aid skills for many of the more common injuries such as bleeding, burns, head injuries, sprains, strains, fractures, etc. A certification of completion will be awarded to those who successfully complete this course only if this course was completed in its entirety.
 

Advanced Asian Medical Theory

This course takes a more thorough look at the concepts of traditional Asian medicine, including Zang-Fu organ theory, a closer look at the five elements in practice, and other fundamental aspects of traditional Asian medicine.
 

Advanced Ear Coning

In ancient cultures as well as the American Indians, ear coning wa developed with profound results. You will find this procedure painless and relaxing, while save and convenient for most ear ailments. This course is a continuation of Ear Coning.
 

Amma—Advanced, Lee’s Method of

Be critiqued in Prone and Supine Amma. Learn how to walk on peoples’ backs—with your knees. Walk on their legs and feet with your feet. How to use your elbows on your client’s back.
 

Amma—Full Body, Lee’s Method of

1,500 year old Japanese form of bodywork, Amma is what Shiatsu was based on. Ms Chaffee began her studies in Amma at the Amma Institute in San Franscisco which is now closed. She went on to study more about the orginal Japaneses form of Amma and from this developed her unique version of body work, which is now called Lee's Method of Amma. This method is exclusively taught at NEIWH. Don’t lose out on this ancient, beautiful massage—rhythmic use of thumbs; learn how to walk on people. Client is fully-clothed!
 

Anatomy & Physiology (Available online-see note below)

Course Length: 150 hours
Prerequisite: none (Note: this is a difficult course)

This course is an in depth study of the human body including the following: chemistry(including organic), cells, tissue, movement, joints, 11 organ systems (i.e. muscles, bones), etc. Note: Online lectures can be taken individually. For example, if you'd like to brush up on muscles, you can take the muscle lecture.
 

Anatomy and Physiology Review

This review is designed for students who have completed or are well into a formal human biology/A&P class. Topics presented will include skin, skeletal & muscular systems, special senses, cardiovascular & lymphatic systems, respiration, endocrine glands, and urinary system. Recommended text:: Frederic H. Martini, Anatomy and Physiology, 6th Edition (Pearson Education).
 

Aquatic Rehabilitation

Course Length: 9 hours
Prerequisite: none

This course will introduce the participants to the world of Aquatic Therapy and the techniques used to rehabilitate patients in the aquatic environment. This workshop will focus on classroom (Institute location) and hands-on techniques (pool—Health South). Upon completion of this course, participants will be awarded an: Aquatic Therapy Technique Certificate. -Open To LMT, PT, PTA, OT, COTA, ATC, & KT-
 

Aquatic Therapy

Course Length: 4 hours
Prerequisite: enthusiasm for water

An introduction and hands-on aquatic laboratory to learn appropriate aquatic techniques for different clinical diagnosis. Will include Bad Ragaz, vertical stabilization, Burdenko Method, and an overview of the Arthritis Foundation (YMCA), Aquatic Program. This course is held off campus at HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital in Concord. Swimming skills are not required.
 

Aromatherapy for Massage Therapists

This course will help you select essential oils to add to your carrier oil that will be most helpful for your client. Essential oils for the musculoskeletal, respiratory, nervous, & gastointestinal systems will be discussed.
 

Aromatherapy in Practice

Prerequisite: Basic Aromatherapy

This class focuses on refining and advancing your use of aromatherapy with your clients. This class provides hands on experiences and teaching about the many ways to use aromatherapy and essential oils in your practice. This class will further your understanding of aromatherapy and energetic healing.

We will present the history of Aromatherapy and several essential oils. A good portion of the class will be devoted to blending oils. Students will get to prepare one blend of oils and take it home. The instructor will stress matching personalities with scents in this creative, hands-on course.
 

Arthritis, Introduction to

This course is designed to provide students with an overview of arthritis, with particular attention to osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and fibromyalgia. In addition, bursitis and tendonitis will be discussed.
 

Arthritis, Understanding

The course will begin with a review of synovial joint and spine anatomy. An overview of arthritis, including bursitis and tendinitis, will be presented, with particular attention to osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, gout, and ankylosing spondylitis. Selected X-rays will be presented, and there will be an opportunity for questions and answers.
 

Asian Bodywork Techniques for Chronic Pain

Course Length: 8 hours

This introduction to Asian Bodywork focuses on simple, effective treatments for common chronic illnesses. Techniques from Acupressure, Tui-na, Joint Manipulation, Fire-Cupping and Moxibustion will be demonstrated and taught in details for treating these conditions: Allergies, Asthma, Back Pain, Digestive Disorders, Fibromyalgia, Sciatica, Frozen Shoulders, Insomnia, Headache, Pneumonia, Arthritis and Tendonitis. The students will also learn self-maintainance applying fundamental theories of Asian medicine (pressure point, meredians, and herbs) and the basics of the Asian diagnosis methodology - SLAP (Seeing, Listening, Asking and Pulse-taking.)
 
Auric Massage, Introduction to

Matter is a form of energy. This has been proven by the “man of the century,” Albert Einstein. Massaging the aura or human energy system is a matter of clear, positive intention and practice. In this introductory class, the human energy system will be dissected and inspected. Participants will learn how the human electromagnetic field, the aura, is directly linked to the endocrine system and the body’s immune system. The seven major chakras and seven levels of the human energy field will also be reviewed. The student will have hands-on practice charging their own energy system, perceiving the aura, scanning the aura of another, and learning simple techniques to massage a client’s aura during a regular massage session. Participants will come away with an understanding of the mechanics of the human energy system and the benefits massage has on it.
 

Auric Massage, Using Intuition with

Many of us are already using our intuition to connect more deeply to our clients. In this experiential workshop, participants will gain a visceral, “hands-on” understanding of clairaudience, clairsentience, clairvoyance, and claircognizance. The participant will learn the difference between true guidance and false guidance. The workshop participant will leave this workshop knowing which of these methods of intuition he/she comes by naturally as well as learning ways to enhance one’s natural abilities. The participants will also have tools to open and enhance the abilities that are not so naturally inherited. This sacred contact with one’s client accesses information which could be highly confidential while at the same time guiding the therapist to the root or trigger point of the client’s discomfort. This workshop could be the jumpstart needed in your massage practice as well as in your life practice.
 

Back Pain, Introduction to

This course is designed to provide students with a general understanding of back pain from an orthopedic point of view, with particular focus on spondylongenic back pain. Review of back and spine anatomy will be included.
 

Back Pain, Understanding

Course Length: 5 hours
Prerequisite: Introduction to Anatomy & Physiology

This course will begin with a review of the anatomy of the human spine and back region. The clinical presentation of various types of back pain will be discussed, focusing on underlying etiologies and the approach to back pain from an orthopedic point of view. Some exercises used in the management of back pain will be presented. Students will have the opportunity to participate in an exercise practice session.
 

Balenotherapy for Chronic Musculoskeletal Issues

Course Length: 4 hours

This course gives an introduction to simple hydrotherapy combined with therapeutic baleno peat. Balenotherapy, used extensively in Europe, treats numerous musculoskeletal complaints. a modality for persistent chronic issues that can be used as an effective therapeutic tool to reduce pain and chronic muscle aches. This procedure can be easily performed in a therapeutic massage office. The workshop will address the specific indications, contraindications and hands on application of balenotherapy
 

Basic Body Mechanics & Self-Care

Course Length: 6 hours
Prerequisite: none

In this course, we will discuss the importance of body mechanics and warm-ups. You will learn how to assess your working style, learn advanced Swedish techniques as well as injury prevention and recovery methods.

Course Length: 8 hours
Prerequisite: Basic Stone Massage

This takes Stone Massage to a whole new level! Mix the heavenly vibrations of essential oils with the earthly grounding of stone, and connect your clients to new levels of bliss with deeper relaxation. Botanical Medicine, Introduction to

This course will review the scientific research and early eclectic uses for some of today’s most common herbs, including St. John’s wort, Kava kava, Ginseng, Echinacea, Golden seal, Astragalus, Saw palmetto, Black Cohosh, Ephedra, Garlic, Licorice, Milk thistle, and Sarsaparilla. Pharmacology, clinical applications, energetics, toxicities, and drug interactions will be discussed for every herb. Other herbs, which students have questions about, will also be discussed.
 

Breast Massage for Women by Women

This class has been designed for the comfort of you, the practitioner, who has a client that may have had a mastectomy, implants, or is getting over surgery. It is also a way to ask questions and do hands-on work in an environment that is just women.
